Gossamer Gear might not be a household name here in the UK, but in the world of ultralight hiking they've long been revered. Based in Austin, Texas, they've built a loyal following around minimalist, thoughtfully engineered kit that strips away the fluff and focuses on function. We've previously tested their Grit 28L fastpacking pack — a stripped-back, go-faster rucksack that impressed with its clever layout.
The Vanish Duffel follows the same ethos. It's a 38-litre featherlight duffel designed for "just in case" moments — the surprise gym stop, the sudden airport overspill, the impromptu day trip with kids. At 218g, it's one of the lightest functional duffels we've ever tested, and it packs down smaller than a packet of crisps. At around $75 (~£60), it's not cheap, but it delivers. Not yet available in UK retail, though Ultralight Outdoor Gear carries a wide range of Gossamer's products and may stock it.

We've used the Vanish Duffel everywhere. It started out as a gym bag through city commutes, then graduated to beach days, post-hike snack runs, park picnics and "dad panic bag" duty on family trips. It's lived in the car boot, been dragged through airports, stuffed in suitcases, and handed to grumpy toddlers. We used it for weekenders in the Lake District, beach trips in Pembrokeshire, and messy post-hike layers in the Peaks. After months of that, it's still going strong.

Made from 70D recycled Aerobic nylon, it feels silky-soft in the hand but shrugs off casual abuse. We've dragged it across wet grass, dropped it on gravel, shoved it under dripping pub benches — no tears, no fuss. It's not expedition-grade, but it's far tougher than its weight suggests.
Two external side pockets — one stretchy, one solid — both punch above their weight. The stretch pocket became our go-to for bottles, suncream and tangled charging cables; the firmer pocket was ideal for soggy trunks, toiletries or sandy flip-flops. They're genuinely useful, not decorative.

Alongside standard duffel handles there are side grips for quick grabs and corner loops for attaching jackets, towels or carabiners. A snap popper keeps the handles tidy when the bag's open — a minor detail that saves a remarkable amount of faff when juggling multiple bags and a toddler. The smooth-running zips never snag, even when the bag's bulging with towels and trainers.
"At 218g, it packs smaller than a packet of crisps — and gives you 38 litres of backup capacity whenever you need it."
The 38-litre capacity hits a sweet spot. We've used it to lug a full gym kit across town, cram in beach gear for the whole family, and stash a chaotic mix of snacks, toys and waterproofs on weekends away. Because it's soft-sided, it slots neatly into odd corners — under prams, behind car seats, in the nooks of overhead lockers.

Our verdictThe smartest backup duffel we've tested — best-in-class packability, real-world usefulness. The Vanish Duffel isn't flashy. It doesn't shout for attention. But it's exactly the kind of product we love — lightweight, cleverly made, and actually useful. It's the bag you keep nearby, just in case. And it turns out, that's something most of us need more often than we realised. Not yet widely available in UK retail, but worth seeking out. For travellers, families or gym-goers who value packability and function, it's a brilliant investment. Find Gossamer Gear products at Ultralight Outdoor Gear or direct at gossamergear.com.
How durable is the Gossamer Gear Vanish Duffel?Surprisingly durable for a 218g bag. The 70D recycled nylon handles sand, damp grass, concrete floors and travel chaos without issue. No tears, snags or worn seams across our testing.
Is the Gossamer Gear Vanish Duffel available in the UK?Not widely through UK retail yet. Gossamer Gear products can be found at Ultralight Outdoor Gear or ordered directly from gossamergear.com. It's worth checking for UK stockists.
How much can you fit in the Gossamer Gear Vanish Duffel? The 38L capacity handles a full gym kit, beach gear for a family of four, or weekend overspill from a suitcase. For hiking or backpacking, it's not designed for that use — but as a backup bag, it's generous.
Is the Gossamer Gear Vanish Duffel worth the money?Yes — as long as you understand what it's for. At around $75/£60, it's not cheap for a packable duffel, but the quality, weight and versatility justify the spend. For anyone who travels or adventures regularly, it earns its place.
