Overview

Gossamer Gear is best known among ultralight hikers and long-distance thru-packers, but the Aero Jet 35L is a deliberate move into the one-bag travel space. The same lightweight design philosophy that makes their hiking packs exceptional has been applied here — the result is a 1.1 kg carry-on bag that carries like a hiking pack, organises like a suitcase, and handles everything from airport sprints to six-hour city walks without complaint.

At £229, it sits at the premium end of the one-bag travel market — below the Peak Design Travel Backpack 30L and the Aer Travel Pack 3, but above many alternatives. The comparison it wins most decisively is against the Osprey Farpoint 40: lighter, more comfortable, and better designed for people who will actually be on their feet with it.

How we tested

We used the Aero Jet 35L as our primary travel bag on a three-week family trip through Amsterdam, Berlin and Italy — pairing it with a Gossamer Gear Vanish Duffel as the only other bag. It came with us on long city days, airport transitions, train journeys and toddler-fuelled excursions. Back in the UK, we have continued using it for regular commuting and day trips, and it has not once been outpaced by what we asked of it.

Features and performance

Build quality

The materials feel premium and tough — after multiple international flights, train journeys and constant daily use, ours still looks fresh. The reinforced carry handles (top and side) are structured and easy to grip, and the sternum strap keeps the pack stable when walking at pace. The stitching throughout is excellent and shows no signs of stress even after sustained hard use.

The clamshell design opens flat like a suitcase — packing and unpacking at airport security is genuinely painless.

“We wore it on a six-hour walking tour of Amsterdam and genuinely forgot it was on our back. That is not something you can say about many 35L bags.”

Organisation and carry comfort

The clamshell design is the star feature — it opens wide, giving clean suitcase-style access to the main compartment. A padded laptop sleeve accommodates a 16” MacBook perfectly, a zipped top pocket handles passports and headphones, and the oversized front mesh dump pocket swallowed rain jackets and baguettes with equal ease. The shoulder strap stash pockets are useful but lack zip closures — fine for sunglasses or snacks, not for anything valuable.

Carry comfort is exceptional. The wide, sculpted shoulder straps feel like something from a proper hiking pack, distributing weight evenly and staying comfortable for extended periods. The one gripe is that when carrying the bag suitcase-style by the side handles, the shoulder straps flap about with no way to tuck them away — a missed design opportunity that would be an easy fix.

Our verdictOne of the best carry-on travel packs we have tested. The Gossamer Gear Aero Jet 35L is a thoughtful, well-made and genuinely comfortable travel backpack that works harder than almost anything else at this size. Strap-flapping aside, there is very little to criticise — it organises intuitively, carries superbly, fits carry-on requirements and survived three weeks of sustained family travel without a scratch. For digital nomads, frequent flyers and anyone who travels regularly and wants a bag that genuinely performs, it is a standout choice and a worthy investment.Buy the Gossamer Gear Aero Jet 35L →

FAQs

How comfortable is the Gossamer Gear Aero Jet 35L to carry all day?Extremely comfortable. Wide sculpted shoulder straps carry like a hiking pack. We wore it on six-hour city walks fully loaded without a complaint.

How well does the Gossamer Gear Aero Jet 35L organise kit?Very well. Clamshell opening, padded laptop sleeve, zipped top pocket, oversized front mesh pocket and two bottle pockets — clean and intuitive without over-engineering.

How much can you fit in the Gossamer Gear Aero Jet 35L?More than the 35L label suggests in practice. It handled a three-week Europe trip as a primary bag. Fits standard carry-on dimensions for BA, EasyJet, KLM and Swiss.

How does the Gossamer Gear Aero Jet 35L perform in the rain? The materials feel water-resistant and shrugged off light rain without issue. For sustained downpours or complete immersion, a pack liner or cover is recommended.

Is the Gossamer Gear Aero Jet 35L worth the money?Yes. At £229 it is premium, but it carries better than most rolling luggage, organises more intuitively than most competing travel packs, and survived three weeks of hard daily use looking fresh. Worth every penny for frequent travellers.
