The Fisherfield 6: a three-day Wester Ross expedition

Overview

Three days and two nights deep in Fisherfield Forest — Scotland's Great Wilderness, and one of the most remote mountain landscapes left in the UK. Over 41 rugged kilometres you'll summit some of Scotland's least-trodden peaks, cross wild rivers, and camp beneath skies unspoiled by anything man-made. This is not a walk in the park. It's a proper backcountry challenge for hillwalkers who already know what they're doing.

Led by an experienced Mountain Leader, you'll carry everything you need across mountain passes, boulder fields and deep glens. The country here demands real skill — pacing, route choice, water management, judgement — and the trip is built to sharpen all of it. The reward is a sense of remoteness few places in the UK can still offer, and a circuit that experienced walkers regard as one of the great expeditions in Scotland.

Who it's for

This trip is for fit, experienced hillwalkers ready for a true wilderness challenge. You'll carry a full pack over steep, rough and often pathless terrain, with multiple river crossings and no phone signal once you leave the road. If you've done multi-day Scottish trips, are comfortable with self-reliance, and want to venture properly off the beaten track, this is the one. Expect to test both body and mind — and to come out the other side with something most walkers in the UK will never know they're missing.

What you can expect

  • Three days carrying your kit across one of the wildest landscapes in the UK
  • Summits of several of Fisherfield's iconic Corbetts and Munros, including Ruadh Stac Mòr — one of Scotland's most remote Munros
  • Wild camps in extraordinary solitude — one night high on the mountains, one beside a quiet lochan
  • Multiple river crossings (numbers and difficulty depend on the weather)
  • Skills sharpened along the way: pathless navigation, river-crossing technique, weight management, weather reading
  • A small group led by a Mountain Leader who knows this country intimately
  • No phone signal beyond the start point — the disconnection is part of the trip
